Thought to have originated in Spain, where the Empanada Festival is part of Galician culture, the name comes from empanar, or to coast with bread.  It is used in referring to the final filled culinary creation.  Though the Spanish word has been adopted in English, the Empanada is by no means exclusively Spanish.

Every nationality developed its own version so the product’s appeal is truly international.  The English call them Cornish Pasties, in the Caribbean they are called Pastelitos, the Indian’s call them Curry Puffs, the Italians have the Calzone and in South and Latin America they are called Empanada’s.
